6 Tips for winning a business plan competition

December 3rd, 2009 by Phin No comments »

1. Choose the competition carefully

The Winners Podium
The Winners Podium

Competitions are not equal. As you’ll have noticed from this blog they are run by many sorts of organisations (private companies, media groups, government agencies or universities) with vastly different agendas.  Consider carefully the amount of time it will take and what the end result will be. Don’t automatically be put off if the prize fund or cash payout is small – often the contacts you will make and the advice you’ll receive as part of the process will be as valuable as winning the top prize.

2. Be prepared, do your research

Give yourself time to research and prepare.  Having judged a few competitions recently and having spoken to other judges, I’ve noticed that many business plan competitions entrants share a weakness – they are unsure or unfamiliar with the market for their product. Judges often have experience of the market you are pitching in and can spot a deficiency in market knowledge easily.  There is a wealth of information out there, from your own market research and testing, to online resources like VentureNavigator. Use them!

3. Seek out mentors and get advice

One of the most important things you can do in a business plan competition, wherever possible, is to find advisors and mentors with experience in your field. Their advice should feed through to your written plan,  pitch or presentation. It’s a sure ways to avoid tripping up on point 2 (above)!

4. Practice, Practice, Practice

If you get as far as standing in front of a judging panel, don’t wing it.  Practice your pitch and try to pre-empt some of the question they may fire at you (financials, routes to markets, skills and people you may need etc.)  A word of warning – there’s a fine line between practicing enough and sounding like a robot. Expect to think on your feet a bit.

5. Listen to feedback and act on it

Any business plan competition entry starts with as good a chance as the next. In most competitions there will be several stages and the field gets progressively smaller. If you don’t listen to the feedback and make adjustments as you go through the process, you’re missing a vital opportunity to get ahead of the game.

6. Be confident and passionate

Winners of business plan competitions (be they individuals or teams), always display confidence in their plan and passion about their ideas. From a judges point of view you can tell this even from an early written plan entry and certainly when they walk in a room. Look and act as if you believe what you’re saying or you’ll be at a serious disadvantage.

 And if you don’t win…

Remember, there is more to a business plan competition than just winning. The feedback you receive and the contacts you make may prove to be the most valuable thing for your new business.    AH5MR73Q2NXB

November 18th, 2009 by Phin No comments »

Find Invest Grow (FIG) is an interesting organisation that works with young entrepreneurs (specifically undergraduates and graduates of the past five years – which they refer to as FIG Seeds), to help them develop their business plans and crucially introduce them to suitable investors. In return they ask for a small (5%) equity stake in any successful companies.

The Funding Drive, Winter 2010 is Find Invest Grow’s first funding event. 10 budding entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to pitch for investment to a panel of active investors (They call them FIGureheads!) who are looking to mentor and fund student or recent graduates’ start-up businesses.

As an added bonus, one compnay invited to pitch will get a £1000 grant to invest in their business.

How to Apply

Entries for this round need to be in by 18th January. You can enter and find out more about the FIG competition here.

20 – 30 potential seed companies will then be invited to a Workshop event on the 28th January and 10 will be invited to the Pitch to Investor event on the 8th February.

The Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship

November 4th, 2009 by Phin No comments »

Never let it be said we shy away from the big issues in the competitions we highlight! Although this is at the high end of what we cover (and is not just a UK award) I thought we should give this highly important award a mention.

The Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship support social entrepreneurs whose work has the potential for large-scale influence on critical challenges of our time: tolerance and human rights, health, economic and social equity, peace and security, institutional responsibility, and environmental sustainability. These issues are at the heart of the foundation’s vision of empowering people to create a peaceful, prosperous, sustainable world. Within these issues, Skoll is particularly interested in applications from social entrepreneurs working in five critical sub-issue areas that they consider to threaten the survival of humanity – climate change, nuclear proliferation, pandemics, conflict in the Middle East and water scarcity.

The Skoll Awards provide later-stage, or mezzanine, funding. In most cases, the grant is provided for core supportto help organizations expand their programs and capacity to deliver long-term, sustainable equilibrium change. The Skoll Awards are not intended for new or early-stage programmes or initiatives. Programmes submitted for consideration should have a track record of no less than three years.

Deadline for Applying:
Applications are accepted and reviewed on a year-round basis, with successful applicants receiving initial funding installments shortly after decisions are made. The current deadline is February 17, 2010 with the  internal review process for these applications taking a minimum of six months to be completed. Awards will be presented publicly at a ceremony at the Skoll World Forum, which occurs at the end of every March in Oxford, England.

How to Apply
